Winnipeg Technical College believes that significant learning takes place outside our institution and that this learning can and should be assessed and recognized. Recognizing previously acquired knowledge and skills increases learner confidence and educational efficiency and is consistent with good adult education practice.
A learner may earn up to 75% credit in a program when credit for prior learning, including transfer of credit, is awarded. If warranted, additional credits (that is, more than 75% of the program) may be granted by the appropriate instructor in consultation with the Registrar, the Vice-President, Academic, and the Recognition of Prior Learning Coordinator. Tuition fees are based on training provided.
Prior learning at Winnipeg Technical College can be recognized in the following ways:
1. External Transfer of Credit
A learner may transfer credit for courses successfully completed at other recognized institutions. The learner must supply the following to assist in the evaluation:
Original copy of transcript
Copy of course outline or textbook
Any other relevant material
If Winnipeg Technical College is not familiar with the programs or courses delivered at another institution and the learner cannot provide the above documentation, then the learner may have their prior learning assessed through the Prior Learning Assessment option described below.
Credit transfer fees are $35.00 per course to a maximum of $250.00.
2. Internal Transfer of Credit
Students transferring between programs at the College will have outcomes evaluated by the receiving program. A course classification of CT will be used to indicate Credit Transfer.
No fee will be assessed for an internal transfer of credit.
3. Prior Learning Assessment
Candidates may apply for credit for appropriate learning that they have acquired through experience. Candidates who have an appropriate level of knowledge and skills that are similar to competencies offered by the College may apply for an assessment of their prior learning.
Candidates may provide evidence of their learning through a variety of methods including demonstrations, a portfolio, assignments, interviews, or the challenge for credit option.
4. Challenge for Credit
