Program Description

The Business Administrative Assistant program introduces students to both theory and practice in business and office administration skills.

Program content consists of:

  • Advanced word processing skills
  • Software applications in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
  • Desktop Publishing and web page design and maintenance using Office 2007 applications
  • Accounting principles and computerized accounting systems using Simply for Windows
  • Database and statistical analysis using Access and Excel
  • Communication skills in public speaking, customer service, resume writing and file management. Also includes minute taking and business etiquette workshops

    This program consists of 12 core courses.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have obtained a complete Grade 12 standing from a Canadian school including:

  • Grade 12 Math (40S)
  • Grade 12 English Language Arts (40S)

A successful career as a Business Administrative Assistant provider usually requires:
  • Interest and aptitude in computers

Program Length/Start Dates/Location:

  • Full-time students - 10 months
  • Half-time students - 2 school years
  • Class hours - morning (8:30-11:30 am), or afternoon (12:30-3:30 pm) or day (8:30 am-3:30 pm)
  • Location - Pembina Campus
  • Start dates - September (If space is available, another intake will be integrated into the class.)

Work Practicum

The Business Administrative Assistant program features a six week office apprenticeship in a local business/office which provides students with valuable on-the-job training and experience. Students will apply skills learned in the classroom and develop new skills through working within an actual employer's facility.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of this program usually find employment as administrative assistants, administrative clerks, executive secretaries, and receptionists in a wide variety of business/office settings.

The Cumulative Employment Rate for graduates of this program for the period of July 2003 to June 2008 is 91%.

This course will begin with basic document formatting and progresses through to more advanced features such as mail merge, tables, and graphics using Word 2007 software.

Print Communications (Document Design)
Effective document design enhances both the readability and the image of documents, which are critical components of effective communication. Students learn to prepare and produce documents efficiently using the standard formats required for most professions. This course also teaches the correct use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling including proofreading skills. Students will need to acquire a typing speed of 45 wpm to complete this course.

This course introduces the concept of organizing and managing projects and portfolios which involve technical writing, conflict resolution techniques, and time management skills.

Database Fundamentals and MS Access
The course teaches students how to use different financial, statistical, and mathematical functions in Microsoft Excel  and Access. Students learn how to create database, compile and manage data, and create statistical data and calculations for business analysis purposes.
