Program Description

The Rehabilitation Assistant program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality rehabilitation care to clients under the supervision of a Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and/or Physical Therapist.

Program content includes Effective Communication - Interpersonal and Workplace, Healthcare Delivery Systems, Kinesiology of Movement, Disabling Conditions and Therapeutic Skills delivered at WTC's Pembina Campus and Anatomy and Psychology at Red River College (Notre Dame Campus).

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have a grade 12 high school diploma (academic) from a Canadian school including credits in:

  • Grade 12 English Language Arts (40S)
  • Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry or Physics (40S)
Students are also required to have:
  • Current CPR (Basic Rescuer) and First Aid Certification (required by start of classes)

Work Practicum

The Rehabilitation Assistant Program features a twelve-week Work Practicum placement in a local workplace which provides students with valuable on-the-job training and experience. Students will apply skills learned in the classroom and develop new skills through working within an actual employer's facility.

Work Practicum placements may involve hours outside of the regular work day. Students must be available for work placements between the hours of 7:30 am and 5:30 pm. Students will be required to undergo a "Criminal Records Check" and a "Child Abuse Registry" check by Work Practicum hosts.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of this program usually find employment as Rehabilitation Assistants in Winnipeg hospitals, long-term care facilities and as Teaching Assistants in public schools.

The Cumulative Employment Rate for graduates of this program for the period of July 2003 to June 2008 is 89%.

The median wage for students graduating from this program between July 2007 and June 2008 is $15.60 per hour.

RH-012 Communication Skills (45 Hours)
This course examines both personal and professional models of effective communication. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking and ethical problem solving. Course content will examine patient/health care provider experiences in order to prepare students for effective communication in professional situations.

RH-022 Introduction to Rehabilitation: Health Care System
(42 Hours)
This course introduces students to the roles and responsibilities of health care providers engaged in the provision of rehabilitation services. Students will be prepared to examine the role of rehabilitation personnel in the ever-changing face of health care delivery. Students will develop the ability to respond to individuals as they move through the health care system from injury and illness to health.

RH-040 Disabling Conditions (135 Hours)
This course focuses on frequently encountered conditions which will be presented utilizing physical and psychological aspects of conditions in pediatric, adult and geriatric population groups. Emphasis will be placed on the impact of these conditions within the framework of the impairment, disability and handicap model.

RH-050 Normal Functional Movement (111 Hours)
This course involves applied kinesiology which allows students to understand the normal and abnormal movement of the human body.

RH-052 Therapeutic Skills: Client Management (93 Hours)
This course provides an overview of the client management skills utilized by all three disciplines in the rehabilitation field. These skills are the basis to safely managing clients and staff. Skill development at this level will establish the foundation required for discipline specific skills.

RH-060 Therapeutic Skills: Discipline Specific (129 Hours)
This course provides an overview of the development    of OT/PT/SLP discipline specific skill sets. Students will develop skills specific to particular rehabilitation settings. Professionals in each discipline will deliver the skill set necessary for this course.

RH-070 Work Practicum (378 Hours)
The Work Practicum component is an opportunity for students to apply and practice the skills learned in the classroom to an actual field setting. Field placements may be OT/PT/SLP specific or combinations of the three disciplines.

Human Anatomy and Physiology (84 Hours)
This course is designed to provide an introductory study of the
structure and pertinent aspects of the function of the principal organ systems. The importance of learning and using correct terminology is stressed. Laboratory exercises are provided to support and enrich the theoretical content by having students perform dissections and complete lab reports.

H11-S104 Psychology (58 Hours)
This course is an introductory study of general and developmental psychology. It is designed for students in health care programs and is aimed at the practical application of social science knowledge in the helping relationships, emphasizing fundamental principles of growth and development. Key concepts of personality, motivation, emotional behaviour and methods of coping/adapting are included.  Overall, the student is expected to gain insight into the roots of human behaviour from both a physical and psychological perspective.

Developmental Psychology (60 Hours)
This course focuses on the biopsychosocial development of the
individual from conception to death, presented in a chronological manner. It emphasizes key concepts in developmental psychology, including current theories and research, with application to real-life situations. The content focus is topical, and includes physical, cognitive and social development across the lifespan.
