Program Description
The Medical Administrative Assistant program offers students a unique combination of medical, computer and business courses. Graduates of the Medical Administrative Assistant program enter the workforce with confidence and skill in medical documentation, medical terminology, computer applications, business related skills, billing, scheduling, and medical transcription.
A Medical Administrative Assistant is an administrative member of a health care team. This course will provide the background for working as a Medical Administrative Assistant in hospitals, physicians’, specialists’, and optometrists’ offices as well as other medical related environments.

Entrance Requirements
Applicants must have obtained a complete Grade 12 standing from a Canadian school including:
- Grade 12 Math (40S)
- Grade 12 English Language Arts (40S)

A successful career as a Medical Administrative Assistant provider usually requires:

Program Length/Start Dates/Location:
Full-time students - 10 months Half-time students - 2 school years Class Hours - morning (8:30-11:30 am) or afternoon (12:30-3:30 pm) or day (8:30 am-3:30 pm) Location - Pembina Campus Start dates - September (If space is available, another intake will be integrated into the class.)
Work Practicum
The Medical Administrative Assistant program features a six-week Work Practicum placement in a local workplace which provides students with valuable on-the-job training and experience. Students will apply skills learned in the classroom and develop new skills through working within an actual employer's facility. The unique nature of this program and the sensitivity of training situations may also require students to undergo Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry checks by Work Practicum hosts.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates of this program usually find employment as Admitting Clerks and Medical Administrative Assistants. Work settings include hospitals, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, medical offices, specialists' offices, health insurance companies, community based health organization and government offices with medical related departments.
Students should note that to pursue a job opening in hospital admitting departments, a Grade 12 Diploma is required.
The Cumulative Employment Rate for graduates of this program for the period of July 2003 to June 2008 is 91%.
The median wage for students graduating from this program between July 2007 and June 2008 is $14.92 per hour.

Medical office software is also included as well as an introduction to doctor’s orders transcription theory. |
