Program Description

The Production Art program offers students exposure to all aspects of the print media industry, from concept and computer art, to a completed printed product.

Production Art is the only program at the College that features Macintosh computers—the world standard for the Graphic Arts industry. Students use professional software applications including Photoshop to create exciting design projects that are also printed such as CD covers, posters, web graphics, labels, greeting cards, magazine ads and more.

Various techniques and technologies allow students to bring their artwork to the last stages of production, including offset and flexography printing, cutting, folding, binding, perforating, etc.

Production Art is designed to accommodate the student. Individuals can focus on areas of the program that match their own aptitudes and interests. This individualized instruction allows students to achieve their personal goals and maximize their potential.

Students can choose one or more of the single-credit courses offered or complete all ten and receive a Certificate of Completion. Program content consists of:

Entrance Requirements

Applicants should be currently enrolled in or have successfully completed credits or equivalent standing from a Canadian school in:

  • Grade 10 Math (20S)
  • Grade 10 English Language Arts (20F)

A successful career in Production Art usually requires:

  • Ability to distinguish colours accurately
  • Attention to neatness and detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Creative and/or mechanical aptitude

Program Length/Start Dates/Location:

Full-time students - 10 months
Half-time students - 2 school years
Class Hours - morning (8:30 am-11:30 am) or afternoon (12:30 pm-3:30 pm) or day (8:30 am-3:30 pm)
Location - Henlow Campus
Start Dates - September, November, February and April


Work Practicum


The Production Art program features a four-week Work Practicum placement in a local industry workplace which provides students with valuable on-the-job training and experience. Students apply skills learned in the classroom and develop new skills through working within an actual employer's facility.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of this program usually find employment as graphic designers, electronic publishers, flexography and offset press operators or assistants and bindery operators in printing and advertising companies, as well as the advertising, art and communication departments of other organizations.

The Cumulative Employment Rate for graduates of this program for the period of July 2003 to June 2008 is 83%.

The median wage for students graduating from this program between July 2007 and June 2008 is $15.00 per hour.

This course is designed to provide students with basic knowledge of the practices relating to and about drawing. Students learn how this knowledge interacts with the rules of layout and the elements and principles of design.

Advanced Composition (Preflight & PrePress)
This course guides students through the necessary steps for providing electronic files for output at a service bureau or commercial printer. Colour separation issues like process and spot colours are explained as well as basic trapping decisions.

This course introduces students to step-by-step production procedures from job planning to prepress and presswork. Basic finishing techniques will also be introduced.
