Program Description

The Hairstyling program provides students with the study and practise of all aspects of hair services for men and women. Students also receive basic training in manicuring and beauty treatments. The Hairstyling program offers a Work Practicum component towards the end of the program providing connections to potential employment opportunities.

Students attend either full-time or part-time between September and June. Students are evaluated through written tests and performance checklists for practical skills on either models and/or mannequins. This accredited program follows Manitoba Competitiveness, Training and Trade, Apprenticeship Branch guidelines.

Program content consists of:

  • Client services
  • Hairstyling
  • Permanent waving
  • Hair shaping
  • Hair coloring and lightening
  • Salon management

Entrance Requirements

Prospective students should be currently enrolled in or have successfully completed credits or equivalent standing from a Canadian school in:

  • Grade 10 Math (20S)
  • Grade 10 English Language Arts (20F)

Program Length/Start Dates/Location:

Full-time students:   12 months
Half-time students:   24 months

The Hairstyling program offers both day and evening classes. Class hours:

Morning - 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Afternoon - 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Day - 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Evening - 3:45 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Location:  Henlow Campus

Start Dates - September, November, February, and April

Apprenticeship

After the first year and 1500 hours of apprenticeship, students complete a practical examination administered by the Apprenticeship Board. After passing the exam, students complete a second year and 1500 hours of apprenticeship and then write a final theory exam. A minimum score of 70% on both exams is required to receive a Certificate of Qualification.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of this program usually find work as Hairstylists with local private and chain hair salons. Opportunities also exist as receptionists, product technicians, beauty sales representatives, and salon owners and managers.

The Cumulative Employment Rate for graduates of this program for the period of July 2003 to June 2008 is 93%.

The median wage for students graduating from this program between July 2007 and June 2008 is $9.35 per hour.

Work Practicum

The Hairstyling program features a Work Practicum placement in a local workplace which provides students with valuable on-the-job training and experience. Students willy apply skills learned in the classroom and develop new skills through working within an actual employer's facility. The Work Practicum placement is done near the end of the program.

This course provides students with an introduction to shampoo, hair and scalp treatments, basic blow-drying, curling iron, and braiding techniques. The theory portion of this course includes safe work habits in the salon and decontamination and safety control.

Basic Hairstyling

Students learn basic skills in fingerwaving, pincurling, roller setting, braiding, and sectioning. Theory assignments are related to practical components as well as trichology, pH scale, shampoos, rinses, hair, and scalp treatment.

Related Salon Services
This course focuses on the function and composition of the skin including identification of diseases and disorders. Students perform basic beauty services such as makeup application and eyebrow shaping. Nail anatomy, diseases, disorders, and manicure services are also included.

Basic Hair Cutting and Thermal Styling
Students learn blow-drying, pincurl, roller setting, and updos as well as basic haircutting techniques. The theory related to haircutting and introductory reception skills are also covered.

This course focuses on intermediate fingerwave, pincurl, roller setting, comb-outs as well as updos. This course also describes sales techniques, inventory procedures, and information on wigs, hairpieces, and hair extensions.
